What is Challenge soccer?
The ABYSA Challenge Program utilizes coaches who have significant coaching and playing experience. Many of the Challenge Trainers who work in this program also work in the Highland Football Club, the Classic Division of ABYSA. All teams train twice each week with our professional trainers.
Each team has a designated game day coach. All game day coaches are volunteers, and the experience level of these coaches varies widely.
What is the cost of Challenge soccer?
The total cost of the program is $376 for first season players and includes a complete home and away uniform. The cost for returning players who do not need a uniform and for the spring season is $295. The season fees include two training t-shirts (per year) and all training and referee fees. Financial Aid is available for families with a documented need who otherwise could not participate in the Challenge Player Training Program.
How long does the Challenge season run?
The fall training season is from mid-August through early November. The spring training season lasts from early-March through early May.
How much travel is involved?
All matches are played in the Western North Carolina area. Half of these matches are in Asheville while the other half are played at away sites. These games are mostly within a one-hour driving distance – Hickory, Hendersonville, etc.
What is the Challenge tryout process?
ABYSA conducts tryouts for players in May and also some supplemental evaluations in December/January. Many players will be invited to participate in the Challenge program; however, some players will be best advised to continue their soccer development with the Recreation program and to try out again the following year.
Players participating in tryouts will be notified via the email address that is provided on the registration form. Please make sure that the email address is accurate. We hope to inform players of their selection status as soon as possible after their final tryout date.
What is I am not offered a position in the ABYSA Challenge Player Training Program?
Soccer is a sport for everyone to enjoy at every level. If you are not selected, we hope that you will continue your soccer in our ABYSA Recreation Program.
